Data Analyst Program

Month 3 of 7 · 20–23 hours

Python for Data Analysis

Python is the most popular programming language for data work. This course starts from zero: variables, data structures, decisions and loops. Then you will write your own functions and move on to the two libraries analysts use most, NumPy and pandas, to load, clean and reshape real datasets.

Weeks

  1. Week 1Python BasicsRun Python code and understand variables and the basic data types.4–5 hours · 2 videosDone
  2. Week 2Data Structures, Conditional Statements and LoopsStore collections of data and process them automatically.5–6 hours · 4 videosDone
  3. Week 3Functions and NumPy BasicsPackage your code into reusable functions and calculate quickly on arrays.5 hours · 2 videosDone
  4. Week 4Pandas, DataFrames, Data Cleaning and Data ManipulationLoad a real dataset into pandas, clean it and answer questions with it.6–7 hours · 4 videosDone
  5. FinalClean and Analyze a Dataset in PythonGraded project with a rubric.

What you will be able to do

  • Create variables and work with numbers, strings and booleans.
  • Store data in lists and dictionaries and loop through it.
  • Write if/elif/else statements and reusable functions.
  • Do fast calculations on arrays with NumPy.
  • Load a CSV into a pandas DataFrame, inspect it and select data.
  • Clean and manipulate data: handle missing values, fix types, filter, sort, group and merge.

Before you start

Prerequisites: None. Comfort with Excel (Course 1) helps you picture what a DataFrame is.

Tools: Google Colab (free, runs in the browser with a Google account, nothing to install) is recommended. Alternatively install Anaconda, which includes Python, Jupyter Notebook, NumPy and pandas.
